Rebuilding the Scenic Heights Home Around Its Setting
The homeowners wanted to stay in the neighborhood they loved while creating more space and making better use of the home’s hillside setting and Front Range views.
What began as an addition became a comprehensive rebuild. Our team retained the existing foundation, rebuilt the home above it, and expanded the layout while preserving the mid-century character that made the property distinctive.
A More Open Entry and Floor Plan
The original entry led into a tight, enclosed staircase. The new design moved the staircase back and opened the surrounding spaces, improving flow between levels and creating a more direct connection to the upper-level windows and views.
Expanding for Everyday Family Life
The renovation added practical square footage for spaces including the pantry, primary bathroom and closet, office, and shared living areas. The result is a home that feels more functional without losing the scale and character of the original design.
Preserving What Made the Property Special
The landscape was an important part of why the homeowners wanted to stay. Existing stonework and mature vegetation were preserved where possible, including a large tree near the home that Cillessen Construction carefully protected throughout the build.

Light, Views, and Custom Craftsmanship
The upper level was designed around openness and the view to the west. Tall ceilings, exposed wood beams, large windows, and broad door openings connect the kitchen, dining, and living spaces while reinforcing the home’s mid-century influence.
Glulam Beams and Mid-Century Structure
Glulam beams span the home from front to back and extend beyond the exterior as an architectural detail. Inside, their natural warmth gives the upper level a strong visual rhythm and allows the structure itself to become part of the finished design.
Kitchen and Dining Areas
The kitchen and dining areas share an open upper-level space with views through large expanses of glass. Light wood cabinetry and flooring provide a warm backdrop, while the dark island and window frames add definition.
A generous island creates space for casual seating and meal preparation. The adjacent dining area sits beside the exterior doors, making it easy for daily life and gatherings to move onto the deck.

Sierra Pacific Windows and Multi-Slide Doors
Sierra Pacific windows and multi-slide doors create large openings to the landscape from several areas of the home, including the kitchen, primary bedroom, and lower-level office. The glass keeps the mountain views present throughout the house and strengthens the connection between indoors and outdoors.
A Custom Mono-Stringer Staircase
Cillessen Construction built the staircase in-house using a single steel stringer and wood treads. Because space was limited, the railing system required careful coordination to ensure the balusters aligned continuously from the lower stair to the upper-level guardrail.

Primary Suite Inspired by the Landscape
The expanded floor plan created a new primary bathroom and closet, with finishes influenced by the colors and materials surrounding the property. Colorado pink flagstone helped inspire the bathroom flooring, while natural wood tones, exposed beams, and a multi-slide door carry the connection to the outdoors into the bedroom.

Exterior Materials Designed to Age Naturally
The exterior palette was selected to complement the hillside setting and develop more character over time.
Random-Width Delta Millworks Siding
We installed Delta Millworks siding vertically in varying widths, creating a tailored, millwork-like finish. The pattern required careful layout around windows, doors, and corners to keep the result clean and intentional.
A Deck That Extends the Main Living Floor
The elevated deck runs along the upper level and connects to the home’s primary gathering spaces. It has room for outdoor dining and seating. The combination of the multi-slide doors, cable railing, and decking makes the indoors and outdoors feel connected.
Accoya Decking
The deck also uses material from Delta Millworks, specified to develop a natural patina as it weathers. Its warm tone visually connects with the exposed beams and other wood elements throughout the home.
Custom Cable Railing
The deck’s cable railing preserves the mountain sightlines. The metal received a clear coating that keeps the material visible and lets it age naturally with the rest of the exterior.

A Shipping Container Pool Built for the Hillside Site
The outdoor living area includes a Modpool shipping container pool, installed by crane on the home’s hillside lot. Cillessen Construction built the surrounding deck flush with the interior floor level to create a smooth transition from the house to the pool. The pool can also be heated to hot tub temperature, giving the homeowners a year-round outdoor feature that takes full advantage of the Rocky Mountain views.

A Home That Works for the Family and the Setting
The finished home gave the family the space they needed without asking them to leave the neighborhood, landscape, and mountain views they already loved. The new layout feels more open and connected, with better flow between everyday living spaces, stronger indoor-outdoor access, and room for the family to grow into the home over time.
Just as important, the project kept the parts of the property that mattered most to them. The mature landscape, preserved tree, hillside setting, and views all remained central to the design, while the renovation gave the home a more functional and distinctly personal mid-century feel.
