The Secret to Keeping Your Project on Schedule

At Cillessen Construction Company, one of the most common questions we hear once a project is under contract is “When will it be finished?”. It’s a fair question. When you invest in a home renovation, you want to know when you’ll be able to enjoy the results.

At Cillessen Construction Company, one of the most common questions we hear once a project is under contract is “When will it be finished?”. It’s a fair question. When you invest in a home renovation, you want to know when you’ll be able to enjoy the results.

In our latest Ask a Builder episode, we tackled this exact subject: project timelines. If you’ve ever wondered why some projects move quickly while others seem to drag on, here’s what really goes into keeping a construction schedule on track.

How We Build a Realistic Project Timeline

Every project begins with an estimate, but once the contract is signed, that’s when we build a true master schedule. We work closely with our subcontractors, architects, and internal team to map out how long each stage of the project should take, from start to finish.

It takes a few weeks to develop this detailed plan, but having it in place gives both us and our clients a clear roadmap. From there, the goal is to keep momentum going while allowing some flexibility for unexpected events.

What Really Affects the Timeline

The scope of work is the most obvious factor, as larger projects naturally take longer, but there’s more to it than that. The timeline depends on how well everyone involved works together. That includes the homeowner, the general contractor, the architect, engineers, and all of the trades.

Smooth communication and timely decision-making make a huge difference. On the flip side, delayed product selections, last minute changes, or lack of coordination can extend a schedule significantly.

From our experience, new builds and additions are usually easier to predict than remodels. With remodeling, you don’t know what’s behind the walls until you open them up. We’ve uncovered homes built without proper foundations or structural issues that weren’t obvious at first glance. Those surprises add time, but they also make planning and flexibility essential.

Common Causes of Delays

Delays can happen for a variety of reasons, some unavoidable and some preventable:

1. Weather

In Denver and the surrounding area, many projects can be built year-round, but cold weather or storms can still slow things down. We always plan “float days” into our schedules to account for this.

2. Permits and inspections

Depending on your city, permit approval might take weeks or even months. For example, Denver can be notoriously slow, while other jurisdictions move much faster. Inspections can also cause small bumps if the department is backed up.

3. Scope changes

Adding extra work mid-project is one of the biggest culprits. While it’s normal for homeowners to refine their vision, each addition comes with more time and coordination.

4. Material availability

The construction industry has seen major supply chain delays in recent years. Waiting until the last minute to order fixtures or appliances can result in month-long setbacks.

How Homeowners Can Help Keep Projects on Schedule

One of the best ways to help is by making selections early. Ordering appliances, plumbing fixtures, and finishes ahead of time ensures they’re ready when needed. At Cillessen Construction, we even store materials in our warehouse so they’re on-hand and can go straight to the job site when the time comes.

Another big factor is simply allowing crews to work without interruption. Daily check-ins on site can seem harmless, but stopping workers mid task slows the whole schedule. Weekly meetings with your contractor are the right place to ask questions and review progress.

What Happens if a Project Falls Behind?

No contractor wants a project to run late, but if it does, there are ways to catch up without cutting corners. Sometimes that means subcontractors working longer hours, or overlapping trades strategically so multiple crews can work in different areas at once.

We try not to push teams into working weekends because family time is important, but during crunch periods, our subcontractors often step up to help keep things on track. The key is collaboration and efficiency, not rushing the work at the expense of quality.

Final Thoughts

At the end of the day, construction timelines are about balance. Homeowners want results quickly, but good work takes careful planning, skilled crews, and patience. We believe the best approach is honesty and transparency. From the first schedule to weekly check-ins, our goal is to keep you informed, avoid surprises, and deliver a finished project that’s worth the wait.

When it comes to homeownership, every dollar you invest matters. Whether you plan to sell your home in the next few years or you simply want to enjoy it more while you’re living in it, choosing the right renovation projects is key. Some updates are purely cosmetic and may not add much value, while others can significantly increase your home’s functionality and market appeal.

At Cillessen Construction Company, we’ve helped homeowners across Colorado make smart renovation choices that balance beauty, practicality, and return on investment. Based on our experience, we’ve put together a guide to the top seven home renovations that add the most value to your property. If you’re considering a home renovation this year, these are the projects you’ll want to think about first.

1. Kitchen Remodels

The kitchen is often called the heart of the home, and it’s also one of the first areas potential buyers notice. A well-designed kitchen remodel can completely transform the way you live in your space while also delivering strong resale value.

Some of the upgrades that consistently pay off include:

Installing modern, energy-efficient appliances.

Replacing outdated countertops with durable, attractive materials like quartz or granite.

Adding a functional island with seating or storage.

Updating cabinets with new finishes or custom designs.

Improving lighting to make the space brighter and more inviting.

Even minor kitchen renovations can yield significant returns. Updating hardware, refinishing cabinets, or replacing worn flooring can make a dramatic difference without requiring a full gut remodel.

2. Bathroom Renovations

Bathrooms are another high-impact area where updates can really pay off. A dated bathroom can make an entire home feel older, while a fresh, modern space instantly elevates the property.

Some of the most valuable bathroom renovations include:

Installing walk-in showers with frameless glass.

Adding double vanities for more storage and functionality.

Upgrading to water-efficient toilets, faucets, and showerheads.

Using quality tile or stone for durability and style.

Improving lighting and ventilation.

You don’t always need to expand the bathroom to see a return on your investment. Smart design choices and quality finishes can go a long way.

3. Adding or Improving Living Space

One of the most straightforward ways to increase your home’s value is by adding usable square footage. Whether you choose to finish a basement, convert an attic, or build a full addition, more space almost always equals more value.

For families, extra living space is particularly appealing. A finished basement can serve as a game room, home theater, or additional bedroom. An attic conversion might become a private office or guest suite. Adding a family room, sunroom, or second story provides even greater functionality.

Of course, additions and conversions are larger investments, but they often pay off both in terms of daily use and resale value. If you’re staying in your home for the long term, this type of home renovation can be one of the most rewarding projects you’ll ever complete.

4. Outdoor Living Spaces

In Colorado, where people love to enjoy the outdoors year-round, functional outdoor living spaces are incredibly desirable. Adding or upgrading decks, patios, or outdoor kitchens can dramatically improve both your lifestyle and your home’s marketability.

Popular outdoor renovation ideas include:

Expansive composite or wood decks with built-in seating.

Covered patios or pergolas for shade.

Outdoor kitchens with grills, refrigerators, and storage.

Firepits or fireplaces for year-round use.

High-quality landscaping to tie everything together.

These projects not only extend your living space but also make your home more inviting for entertaining, relaxing, or simply enjoying the Denver sunshine.

5. Energy-Efficient Upgrades

Today’s buyers are more conscious of energy efficiency than ever, and homeowners are increasingly looking for ways to lower utility bills while reducing their environmental footprint. Renovations that focus on efficiency can add real, lasting value.

Some of the most impactful upgrades include:

Replacing old windows with energy-efficient double/triple pane options.

Adding insulation to walls, attics, and basements.

Installing high-efficiency HVAC systems.

Switching to LED lighting throughout the home.

Using smart thermostats and controls.

Not only do these changes make your home more attractive to future buyers, they also pay dividends while you live there by reducing your monthly expenses.

6. Curb Appeal and Exterior Improvements

First impressions matter. The exterior of your home is the first thing people see, and small improvements here can have a huge effect on value. From landscaping to siding, these upgrades are among the most cost-effective ways to boost your property’s appeal.

High-value exterior projects include:

Updating or replacing siding with durable, low-maintenance materials

Adding stone or wood accents for a modern look

Installing a new front door or garage door

Creating fresh landscaping with plants, lighting, and walkways

Ensuring the roof is in excellent condition

These changes not only attract buyers but also give you a sense of pride every time you pull into your driveway.

7. Basement or Attic Conversions

If you have underutilized space in your home, converting it into something functional can significantly boost value. Finished basements and attics can become game rooms, gyms, offices, or guest suites.

In Denver especially, where space comes at a premium, making use of every square foot is a smart move. A thoughtfully designed basement or attic conversion adds flexibility and makes your home stand out in the market.

Balancing Value and Lifestyle

While it’s helpful to know which home renovations add the most value, the decision ultimately comes down to your lifestyle. The best renovation for you is the one that improves how you live day-to-day, not just what appeals to future buyers.

For example, if you love to cook and entertain, investing in a high-end kitchen may make more sense than adding a bathroom. If you work from home, a home office conversion might bring more long-term satisfaction than upgrading your backyard.

At Cillessen Construction Company, we always encourage homeowners to balance resale value with personal enjoyment. After all, your home should work for you first.

Why Work with a Professional Contractor

Home renovations can be exciting, but they also come with challenges. From permits and codes to design decisions and budgeting, it’s easy to get overwhelmed. Partnering with an experienced contractor ensures your project is done right, on time, and within budget.

These ideas combine function, style, and timeless design to help you create a kitchen that works for everyday life while still feeling fresh and modern.

Thinking about remodeling your kitchen? In our latest YouTube video, Cillessen Construction Company shared the top five kitchen design trends homeowners are asking for right now. These ideas combine function, style, and timeless design to help you create a kitchen that works for everyday life while still feeling fresh and modern.

Here’s a closer look at what’s trending in today’s kitchens…

1. Large Kitchen Islands

A spacious kitchen island has become one of the most requested features in remodels. Islands are no longer just extra counter space, they’re multipurpose hubs for food prep, casual dining, entertaining, and even homework time.

Many homeowners are choosing oversized islands with built-in seating to replace traditional kitchen tables. Others include custom storage for pots, pans, or small appliances to help keep counters clutter-free. Adding a second sink or beverage fridge can also make the island the true centerpiece of the kitchen.

2. Open Shelving

Open shelving continues to grow in popularity because it makes kitchens feel lighter and more open. Instead of filling the space with closed cabinets, more people are incorporating shelves to display dishes, glassware, cookbooks, or decor.

Open shelving works especially well for frequently used items you want within reach. To keep the look clean, many homeowners balance open shelving with traditional cabinets, creating a mix of storage options that’s both practical and stylish.

3. Hidden Appliances

Homeowners are moving toward a seamless kitchen look by integrating appliances into cabinetry. From panel-ready refrigerators to microwave drawers and hidden dishwashers, this design trend keeps the kitchen clean and uncluttered.

With today’s technology, it’s even possible to conceal range hoods and coffee stations behind cabinetry for a truly streamlined appearance. This approach is especially appealing in open-concept homes, where the kitchen is always in view of living and dining spaces.

4. Walk-In Pantries

When it comes to storage, walk-in pantries are at the top of the wish list. A separate pantry helps keep countertops clear, provides organization for dry goods and bulk items, and makes it easy to store appliances that aren’t used every day.

Many homeowners are upgrading their pantries with built-in shelves, pull-out drawers, and even countertop space for meal prep or small appliances like mixers and air fryers. This not only adds convenience but also helps the main kitchen stay organized and clutter-free.

5. Neutral Colors With Warm Accents

In terms of finishes, neutral color palettes like whites, grays, and soft taupes remain popular. These colors create a timeless foundation that won’t feel outdated in a few years. To add character and warmth, homeowners are incorporating natural wood tones, bold backsplashes, or matte black and brass hardware.

The result is a clean, inviting space that balances modern elegance with cozy touches. By layering textures and finishes, you can achieve a kitchen that feels both fresh and personal.

Top 5 Things To Not Overspend On When Renovating

At Cillessen Construction Company, we love helping clients design and build their dream spaces, but we’ve also seen plenty of places where costs can creep higher than necessary. In our recent video filmed on-site at a Boulder remodel, we walked through the top five areas where homeowners often overspend, plus a few smart ways to save without sacrificing quality.

Here’s what we’ve learned from years of building and remodeling homes across Colorado.

1. Kitchens and Appliances

The kitchen is almost always the most expensive room in the house, which makes it the number one spot where overspending happens. Cabinets, countertops, appliances, plumbing fixtures, it all adds up quickly.

One of the biggest traps we see is splurging on name-brand appliances. While brands like Sub-Zero and Wolf have great reputations, they’re not always necessary for a functional, beautiful kitchen. Often, mid-range brands provide the same performance for a fraction of the cost. Our advice: focus on the features and functions you’ll actually use every day rather than just the nameplate on the door.

Another place costs can balloon is countertops. Materials like Taj Mahal quartzite or other trendy stones are beautiful, but stone yards often price them very differently. Visiting multiple suppliers and comparing quotes can save thousands. For bathrooms or smaller spaces, consider remnants from larger slabs. They’re often high-quality pieces at a fraction of the cost.

2. Countertops Beyond the Kitchen

Speaking of countertops, homeowners sometimes assume they need to carry the same material throughout the house. While consistency is nice, mixing materials between rooms can save money and add character.

For example, you might use a premium stone in the kitchen and a more budget-friendly option in bathrooms. With remnants and fabricator deals, you can often score a gorgeous vanity countertop without paying full price for an entirely new slab. It’s one of those small design decisions that stretches your budget further without compromising on style.

3. Windows and Glass

Windows are another area where overspending happens. Big names like Pella and Marvin carry strong brand recognition, but the truth is, lesser-known brands often deliver equal or better performance at lower prices. We’ve used Sierra Pacific windows on many of our projects and have found their quality and hardware to be excellent.

Glass is another factor that affects cost. Triple-pane windows may sound appealing, but in many cases double-pane glass meets code and performs just fine. Unless you have specific energy efficiency goals or unique climate concerns, double-pane may be the smarter, more cost-effective choice.

Custom window shapes like curves and angles are another budget-buster. If you’re in the design phase, keep in mind that radius or specialty windows add cost fast. Standard shapes can help you allocate more budget to other areas of your home.

4. Plumbing Fixtures

Plumbing fixtures are another sneaky place where budgets get stretched. It’s easy to fall in love with one brand and want every fixture in the house to match, but this often leads to unnecessary overspending.

Instead, prioritize the rooms where you’ll notice quality the most, like the primary bathroom and kitchen. For guest bathrooms or powder rooms that see occasional use, a more budget-friendly option works just fine. The truth is, most guests won’t know (or care) whether their faucet matches your kitchen sink. By mixing and matching, you’ll save money while still enjoying luxury where it counts.

5. Exterior Finishes and Roofing

Curb appeal matters, but it’s also one of the easiest areas to overspend. Premium siding and roofing materials are beautiful, yet using them everywhere on your home isn’t always necessary.

On one of our recent projects, we blended a high-end vertical wood siding with areas of stucco. The result? A rich, modern look without the price tag of full wood coverage.

The same approach works with roofing. Metal roofing is stunning and durable, but it’s not always cost-effective to cover your entire home with it. Instead, consider using it as an accent (perhaps on a front porch roofline or a visible architectural feature) and pair it with asphalt shingles elsewhere. This mix delivers the premium look without breaking the budget.

A Bonus Tip: Choose the Right Team

Beyond finishes and materials, one of the best ways to avoid overspending is choosing the right partners. A good builder will help you find smart alternatives, share industry connections, and guide you toward selections that align with your budget and your goals.

And don’t underestimate the value of an interior designer. While it may feel like an added expense upfront, a designer often saves money in the long run by sourcing affordable products, creating a cohesive design plan, and helping you avoid costly mistakes.

Final Thoughts

Home building and remodeling is full of decisions. It’s easy to get caught up in brand names or the allure of high-end finishes, but smart spending is about balance. At Cillessen Construction Company, we believe the best projects are the ones that combine quality, functionality, and timeless design, without wasting dollars where they don’t make a real difference.

Is a Home Addition Worth It? Here’s What You Need to Know

When your home starts to feel a little tight, you may find yourself wondering if it’s time to move or if a home addition could be the solution. Maybe your family has grown, you need a dedicated office, or you’ve always dreamed of a bigger kitchen with more room for entertaining.

When your home starts to feel a little tight, you may find yourself wondering if it’s time to move or if a home addition could be the solution. Maybe your family has grown, you need a dedicated office, or you’ve always dreamed of a bigger kitchen with more room for entertaining.

Whatever the reason, adding on to your existing home is one of the most significant home renovation projects you can take on, and it is natural to ask the question: is a home addition really worth it?

At Cillessen Construction Company, we have been helping homeowners across Colorado navigate big decisions like this for decades. We know that a home addition is not a small investment, but it can pay off in more ways than one if done thoughtfully. Let’s walk through the key things to consider before moving forward, from financial value to lifestyle impact, so you can decide if a home addition makes sense for your situation.

Why Home Additions Are So Popular

A home addition is appealing because it allows you to stay in the home and neighborhood you already love, while also creating the extra space you need. For many families, moving is not ideal. Between rising real estate prices, limited housing options, and the stress of uprooting, adding onto your home can often be the smarter choice.

A well-planned addition also gives you the opportunity to tailor your space to your exact needs. Unlike buying a new home, where you compromise on certain features, an addition lets you design something that truly fits your lifestyle. This is where working with an experienced general contractor matters. A home renovation in Denver, for example, needs to factor in climate, zoning laws, and neighborhood styles, all of which influence how well the addition blends with your existing home.

Common Types of Home Additions

Not all additions look the same, and your goals will determine what makes sense. Here are some of the most common types we see homeowners invest in:

Room Addition: Adding a single room, such as a home office, bedroom, or sunroom, is a popular way to expand without altering the entire home.

Second Story Addition: For those who cannot expand outward due to lot size, going up is a great option. This is one of the bigger investments but can dramatically increase square footage.

Kitchen Expansion: Kitchens are the heart of the home, and expanding one through an addition or bump-out is one of the most rewarding renovations.

Garage Conversion or Addition: Converting or expanding garage space can add livable square footage or functional storage.

Primary Suite Addition: A spacious bedroom with a luxury bathroom can elevate comfort and add long-term value.

Each type of addition has its own considerations and costs, but all share one thing in common: they can transform how you live in your home every single day.

The Financial Side: Does a Home Addition Add Value?

One of the first things homeowners want to know is whether an addition will increase their property value. The answer is generally yes, but how much depends on the type of addition and the market in your area.

A kitchen expansion or a primary suite addition tends to bring some of the highest returns because these are highly desirable features. Adding general living space is valuable too, but the payoff will depend on how well the addition is integrated into the home.

In Denver, where housing demand has remained strong, many additions add significant value, especially when the design aligns with what buyers are looking for. Even if you are not planning to sell soon, investing in a home renovation in Denver can make your property more competitive in the future.

That said, the true value is not only financial. It is also about the quality of life improvements that come with more space. An addition can mean less clutter, more privacy, and a home that functions the way you need it to. Those lifestyle benefits are hard to put a price on.

Things to Consider Before Adding On

Before jumping into a home addition, here are some key factors to think about:

1. Budget and financing

A home addition is a major investment, often larger than other types of home renovation. Knowing your budget and exploring financing options early is essential. Be realistic about what you can afford, but also remember that quality work with durable materials is always worth it in the long run.

2. Zoning and permits

Every city has zoning regulations and building codes that must be followed. For home renovations in Denver for example, setbacks, lot coverage, and height restrictions may affect what is possible. A local contractor like Cillessen Construction can guide you through the permitting process and ensure everything is compliant.

3. Blending old and new

An addition should feel like a natural extension of your home. That means the roofline, exterior materials, and design details should complement the original structure. When done well, the addition looks like it has always been part of the home.

4. Long-term needs

Think not just about your current needs but also how you will use the space in 5, 10, or even 20 years. Designing with the future in mind can make the investment more worthwhile.

5. Construction disruption

A home addition is a large-scale project, which means there will be some level of disruption to daily life. Planning ahead and working with a contractor who communicates clearly can help minimize stress during the process.

Is Moving a Better Option?

Sometimes homeowners wonder if moving might be simpler. While relocating can give you more space, it comes with its own costs: realtor fees, moving expenses, higher property taxes, and the stress of finding the right home.

If you already love your neighborhood, have good schools nearby, and feel connected to your community, a home addition often makes more sense than starting over. On the other hand, if your current property limits what you can build or you want a completely different location, moving may be the better path.

Why Work With Cillessen Construction Company

Choosing the right contractor is the single most important decision you will make in the addition process.
Final Thoughts: Is a Home Addition Worth It?

In most cases, yes, a home addition is definitely worth it, provided it’s planned well and built by an experienced contractor. The financial return, lifestyle improvements, and ability to stay in the home you already love make it a strong option for many families.

We recently dove into the hottest home design trends for 2025 with the team at Cillessen Construction Company and there’s a lot to be excited about!

We recently dove into the hottest home design trends for 2025 with the team at Cillessen Construction Company and there’s a lot to be excited about!

Whether you’re remodeling or building new, these trends bring fresh ideas that combine style, comfort, and personality. We’re sharing what caught our eye, what we love, and a few things we’d approach with caution.

1. Biophilic Design: Bringing the Outdoors In

Greenery inside your home isn’t just a trend, it’s a lifestyle. Plant walls and natural wood accents create a serene vibe that instantly warms up a space. We’re all for it, but fair warning: without the right irrigation setup, it can quickly become a maintenance headache.

Our advice? Embrace the green but plan smartly so your indoor jungle stays lush without stealing every other weekend.

2. Color Drenching: Make a Bold Splash

Going all-in on one color can completely transform a room, giving it personality and punch. We’re fans when it’s done well, like a deep, calming blue or a fresh, energizing green. But not every color works for everyone.

Pink rooms? Maybe not our cup of tea, but hey, if it makes you happy, go for it! Color drenching is about mood and vibe, so pick what feels right for you.

3. Curved Furniture: Soft Shapes, Big Impact

Curves are back with a vengeance. Think rounded sofas and arching shelves that soften spaces and add visual interest. We love the look, but honestly, some pieces sacrifice comfort for style.

If you’re investing in furniture you’ll use daily, don’t let cool shapes mean uncomfortable seating. Find that sweet spot between form and function.

4. Dedicated Spaces: Create Your Own Sanctuary

Making a nook for reading, a play area for kids, or even a whiskey room might sound indulgent, but it’s all about enhancing how you live. We’re big believers in dedicating space to what matters most in your lifestyle.

Got an unused corner? Transform it into your favorite spot. It’ll make a bigger difference than you think.

5. Artisanal and Handcrafted Details: Unique Touches Matter

Nothing says character like handcrafted pieces. Custom light fixtures, unique cabinetry, or a one-of-a-kind entry door can elevate your home’s personality instantly.

We love these authentic touches, but we always remind homeowners that materials like wood countertops often need care and maintenance, so choose what fits your life.

Bonus Trend #1: Maximalism – More Is More (For Some)

This one’s bold. Lots of patterns, textures, and color. If you love eclectic, expressive spaces, maximalism is your playground. But if you prefer calm and clean, this might feel overwhelming.

It’s not for everyone, and that’s okay!

Bonus Trend #2: Textured Ceilings and Walls: Depth and Drama

Adding texture, like wood slats or plaster details, gives rooms a dynamic, crafted feel. We’re all about it, as long as it’s balanced and doesn’t overpower the space.

A well-executed textured ceiling can be a showstopper.

Our Take?

We’re here to help you balance the wow factor with what works for your lifestyle in Denver’s unique climate and vibe. Whether it’s adding greenery or crafting custom artisanal details, thoughtful design always wins.

Outdoor living spaces are becoming more than just a backyard bonus, they’re now an essential part of the home. Whether you’re planning a major renovation or just exploring new ideas, staying on top of outdoor design trends can help you make smart, stylish choices.

In our latest video, we took things outside to talk through our top 5 outdoor design trends for 2025, plus a few bonus picks and honest opinions along the way. From cozy retreats to robot lawn mowers (yes, really), here’s what’s trending, and what to think about before jumping in.

1. Outdoor Kitchens That Bring People Together

We’re starting strong with one of our favorite features: outdoor kitchens. More than just a grill on a patio, the new wave of outdoor kitchens focuses on creating a fully functional (and fully social) cooking space outside.

We love seeing layouts that let the cook stay part of the conversation, with bar seating, beer taps, and even TVs built in. As one of our team members put it: “I like cooking breakfast outside, especially when someone else doesn’t love the smell of bacon indoors”.

What to Watch Out For:
Not every design works. Some setups bring too much of the indoors out, like cabinetry that doesn’t hold up to the elements, or countertops that stain easily. And if your grill is just inches from the dining table? You may want to rethink the layout.

2. Outdoor Retreats for Relaxation or Work

Whether it’s a tucked-away seating nook, a reading corner, or a full-blown poolside lounge, outdoor retreats are making backyards more livable than ever.

We’re seeing homeowners repurpose underused areas into spaces that feel like mini getaways. Think cozy seating with wine in hand (or maybe a golf simulator if that’s your thing). These areas can also serve as remote office pods, workout rooms, or covered hangouts that work all year long.

Pro Tip:
Keep function in mind. A shaded structure or pergola can transform a sunny corner into a comfortable, usable zone. And if you’re thinking about something like a gym or home office, make sure your outdoor retreat has the wiring, Wi-Fi, and insulation to match.

3. Outdoor Smart Tech (Yes, Even Robots)

Tech is moving outside in a big way. From automated lawn mowers to outdoor theaters and camera-equipped bird feeders, there’s no shortage of gadgets for your backyard.

We had a bit of a debate about the robot mowers, but there’s no denying that outdoor smart tech is trending. Permanent projector setups and smart lighting are also high on the list, especially for families who want to spend more time outside, even after the sun goes down.

Our Thoughts:
Use smart tech to enhance convenience and comfort, but think carefully about reliability and safety. That robotic mower might be cool… but are you sure it won’t chase the neighbor’s dog?

4. Walkways with Character (and Practicality)

Walkways are doing more than connecting spaces, they’re adding visual interest to outdoor designs. We’re seeing a rise in mixed-material walkways, natural stone paths, and designs that blend seamlessly into the landscape.

But not every walkway wins us over.

Some of the trending layouts look great in photos but aren’t exactly user-friendly (think: toe-stubbing hazards and overly spaced-out pavers that make you hop like a kid on a playground). The best designs look good and feel good underfoot.

What We Recommend:
Opt for flush, evenly spaced walkways using flagstone or other natural-looking materials. And if you’re planning to walk barefoot, or back from your “wine retreat”, avoid loose gravel paths.

5. Composite Decking for Longevity

Composite decking continues to gain popularity for its low maintenance and wood-like appearance. When done right, composite decks offer a sleek, long lasting solution for outdoor entertaining.

We’re big fans, but with a catch: you have to choose the right product. Cheap composite can fade, crack, or look overly artificial. Higher quality boards hold up better over time and are worth the investment.

Deck Design Tip:
Keep it clean and classic. Some highly decorative layouts look impressive, but they can feel a bit too busy. If you want to go bolder, add subtle borders or mixed tones instead of intricate patterns.

Bonus Trend: Concrete Furniture (In Moderation)

Concrete furniture is showing up a lot recently, especially in modern outdoor spaces. We’re on board with concrete dining tables or fire features, but full concrete chairs? Not so much.

Comfort matters. And unless you’re going for a museum installation, keep things warm and inviting with a mix of wood, cushions, and textures. The same goes for fireplaces: concrete can look amazing, but balance it with cozy accessories.

Final Thoughts: Don’t Skip the Planning Phase

Before you start building your dream backyard, take the time to explore what you love (and what you don’t). In this week’s video, we talked about how even as professionals, we spend hours reviewing photos, experimenting with layouts, and working with designers to make sure the space fits our lifestyle.

Our advice? Don’t rush into trends without knowing what works for you. A thoughtful design process leads to outdoor spaces that are not only beautiful but also functional and timeless.

Top 5 Outdoor Kitchen Mistakes to Avoid (and What to Do Instead)

Building an outdoor kitchen is one of the most exciting upgrades you can make to your backyard, but if you’re not careful it’s easy to fall into common pitfalls that can cost you time, money, and enjoyment down the line.

Building an outdoor kitchen is one of the most exciting upgrades you can make to your backyard, but if you’re not careful it’s easy to fall into common pitfalls that can cost you time, money, and enjoyment down the line.

In this expert round-up, Heath from Cillessen Construction sits down with Trevor from Embers Living to reveal the top 5 outdoor kitchen mistakes people make (plus a bonus tip), and how you can avoid them.

1. Hiring a Contractor Without Outdoor Kitchen Expertise

Too many homeowners trust general contractors who aren’t familiar with the nuances of outdoor kitchens. These contractors shy away from making bold recommendations, leaving homeowners with tiny, underwhelming grill islands that barely function.

How to avoid this: Work with an experienced team like Cillessen Construction Company, Denver building contractors who understand how to design functional, inviting outdoor kitchens that enhance your lifestyle. We collaborate with specialists like Embers Living to create spaces that are both beautiful and built to perform.

2. Lack of Storage and Functionality

Not planning for enough storage leads to clutter, frustration, and frequent trips back inside. Many homeowners underestimate the importance of drawers, cabinets, and trash storage.

How to fix this: Think of your outdoor kitchen like an indoor one. You need space for utensils, grill tools, cutting boards, and trash. We recommend including weather-rated storage drawers and dedicated outdoor trash solutions, especially if you host guests frequently (those beer bottles won’t clean up themselves).

3. No Outdoor Refrigeration

Spending thousands on an outdoor kitchen only to rely on a cheap cooler or make guests run inside for drinks is a recipe for disaster.

Solution: Invest in proper outdoor-rated refrigeration. Whether it’s a beverage center, wine fridge, or a top-of-the-line unit from brands like True, refrigeration is essential for convenience and comfort. Stainless steel interiors, glass doors, and customizable color combos make outdoor fridges as stylish as they are functional.

4. Overloading the Kitchen With Appliances

It’s tempting to load your space with every appliance under the sun (such as grills, smokers, skillets, pizza ovens) but doing so leaves you with no prep or serving space.

What to do instead: Focus on what you’ll use regularly. Start with a high-quality gas grill, then build around it. Add complementary appliances only if there’s enough space left for countertops and food prep areas. Remember: functionality is key.

5. Blowing the Budget on the Grill Alone

Splurging on a $15,000 grill and leaving nothing for cabinetry, refrigeration, or trash drawers will leave your outdoor kitchen looking impressive but functioning poorly.

Better approach: Prioritize a balanced budget. A mid-range luxury grill paired with well-designed cabinetry and storage will give you a better experience than a top-end grill with nothing else. And whatever you do, don’t install your grill near a window (unless you want melted siding).

Bonus Mistake: Not Planning for Climate

Installing an outdoor-only ice maker in a place like Denver, only to realize you’ll have to shut it down for winter, means your investment sits unused half the year.

Plan it right: Consider how your local climate affects outdoor appliances. In Denver, you’ll want to ensure anything with water lines can be winterized, or simply install ice makers inside and save yourself the hassle.

Smart Outdoor Kitchen Design Starts with the Right Team

From layout and appliances to drainage and refrigeration lines, every outdoor kitchen deserves thoughtful planning and expert execution. At Cillessen Construction Company, we use professional design software to ensure every component fits your space and your lifestyle.

Ready to Design Your Dream Outdoor Kitchen?

As trusted Denver building contractors, we’ve built some of Colorado’s most beautiful and functional outdoor kitchens. Whether you’re dreaming of pizza ovens, luxury grills, or turnkey cabinetry with stainless steel refrigeration, we’ve got the experience to bring it all together, on time and within budget.

10 Red Flags to Watch For When Hiring A Contractor

Hiring a contractor for your home project is a big decision. Unfortunately, too many homeowners end up with delays, surprise costs, or worse, unfinished work.

In this week’s episode of Ask a Builder, Ashley and Heath from Cillessen Construction dive into the top 10 red flags to watch out for when choosing a contractor.

1. No Written Contract

If a contractor isn’t using a written contract, that’s a major red flag. A proper contract protects both the homeowner and the contractor by outlining the scope of work, timeline, payment schedule, and responsibilities. Without it, there’s too much room for confusion or disagreement.

2. No Proof of License or Insurance

Always ask for proof of both a contractor’s license and insurance. Licensing ensures they’re legally allowed to take on the type of project you’re planning, while insurance protects you (and them) in case of an accident or error. A contractor without either? Walk away!

3. Requests for Large Upfront Payments

A reasonable deposit typically falls between 10% and 20%. If a contractor asks for significantly more (especially before any work even has started) it could be a sign they’re not financially stable, or worse, that they don’t plan on completing the job.

4. Vague or Incomplete Estimates

Estimates scribbled on a napkin might make for a funny story, but not a good start to your project. A solid estimate should be clearly itemized with descriptions of the work, materials, allowances (for items like appliances or windows), and a grand total. Details matter.

5. Poor Communication Early On

If communication is rocky during the estimate phase, it likely won’t improve once the job begins. Good contractors are responsive, clear, and professional. If you’re already struggling to get answers, consider it a warning sign.

6. No References Available

References are a must. Ask for at least two to three recent clients you can speak with directly. If the contractor dodges this request or claims they don’t have any, that’s a serious red flag.

7. High-Pressure Sales Tactics

If a contractor insists you “sign today to get this price”, be cautious. Ethical contractors won’t pressure you. Take the time you need to review the contract and make an informed decision. If the price disappears tomorrow, it probably wasn’t real to begin with.

8. Contractor Wants You to Pull Permits

Permits are the contractor’s responsibility – not yours. If they ask you to pull the permit, they may not be licensed to work in your area. Always ensure your contractor can handle this legally and professionally.

9. Ready to Start Tomorrow

Believe it or not, availability can be a red flag too. Most reputable contractors are booked out weeks (or even months) in advance. If someone can start immediately, ask why. Are they in demand? Do they have ongoing projects? Or are they just chasing down deposits?

10. No Online Presence or Reviews

Every legitimate business should have some sort of online presence, whether it’s a website, Google reviews, or social media. If you can’t find any trace of your contractor online, be cautious – especially during storm season when fly-by-night companies pop up with fake names and zero accountability.

Bonus: Ask About Subcontractors and Warranties

It’s totally normal for contractors to hire licensed subcontractors for specialized tasks like plumbing, HVAC, or electrical. What’s important is how they manage them – and whether they use a trusted crew.

Also, always ask what kind of workmanship warranty they offer. Good contractors stand by their work with a written guarantee, and they’ll be happy to provide a copy.

Final Thoughts

Hiring the right contractor isn’t just about getting the best price, it’s about choosing someone who’s licensed, reliable, and transparent.

If you’re currently looking for a trusted Denver building contractor, be sure to do your research and prioritize transparency and reputation. It’s always better to take your time than to rush into a relationship that could lead to frustration or unfinished work.

Walk away!
